About Soup's On

In the early nineties there was a shift toward healthy and comfort food. The consumer wanted hearty, home-made, low fat foods that were tasty and nutritious, yet not loaded with additives, trans-fats, or sodium. At the time, Debra B, (often referred to as the 'Soup Lady' or the 'Soup Queen') was working in the catering field while also teaching low-fat cooking classes. Two soups  frequently served to her patrons were Split Pea & Lentil and Butternut Squash. Her soups became so popular that she was encouraged to take her recipes to a retail environment so that they would be readily available for sale in grocery stores. This demand inspired the creation of “Soups On”.

The first soups were sold in 1 litre plastic tubs ‘on consignment’ at fine food stores in the greater Toronto area. Initially the variety of soups was limited to five but now fifteen years later the “Soups On” line up has grown along with its distribution area. Although Split Pea & Lentil continues to be the number 1 seller, “Soups On” now produces 18 varieties of fresh soup and 6 varieties of frozen stock.

Having grown from humble beginnings in the basement of Debra B's Mom's house, today the product is now produced in a busy food plant in Scarborough, Ontario by a skilled team of 20 plus. “Soups On” is now enjoyed throughout Ontario as well as select stores in Quebec. The soups and stocks are still prepared and packaged by hand to ensure the quality and consistency of “Soups On”. Debra B is now known as “Debra Barley”.
